Overview
Backwell Design is a London, Ontario boutique graphic design studio that specializes in consumer packaging. We are owned and operated by Southern Graphic Systems.
We are looking to immediately fill the role of Junior/Intermediate Designer.
Reporting to the senior designer, design manager and studio vice president, you will support our team to fulfill client briefs by providing creative solutions in our fast-paced studio environment. This junior/intermediate level position includes, but is not limited to, design development, adaptations, secondary panel layouts thru to production artwork builds, illustration and 3Ds. The ideal candidate should demonstrate strong visual problem-solving abilities and be able to take direction well. You should be driven to consistently exceed client expectations, thrive in the demands of pressing deadlines and confidently manage multiple and often quickly changing priorities.
We are looking for a designer who is ready to develop their existing skills by working with our creative staff on a range of ambitious and innovative branding and packaging projects. A clear and demonstrated understanding of typography, layout, illustration and art direction will be needed to help the team produce the best work possible.
A good knowledge of the following is essential:
• Illustrator
• Photoshop
• Print Production
Communication is a big part of the job, so you must feel confident to contribute to the entire creative process and interact authentically with the client. The ability to multitask and juggle multiple and ever changing priorities is a must.
Role and Responsibilities
The specific details of the designer’s role will vary, but common activities include:
• Interpreting client briefs into successful and effective and technically sound design concepts
• Offering input to creative meetings and sharing ideas
• Communicating with senior team members to receive feedback and manage timelines
• Liaising effectively with clients and other team members
• Supporting the team throughout the execution of projects
Skills Required
A designer needs a wide range of design and creative capabilities. These include:
• Strong written and verbal communication skills
• Adeptness with leading design software packages
• A determination to achieve and succeed
• Some creative industry experience is an asset
• The ability to meet deadlines in a high pressure environment
• A background of working as part of a design team
• The ability to see projects through from inception to production
• Consistency regardless of project size
• Good organizational skills that support the rest of the team
• The motivation to maintain and improve design standards
• The willingness to listen to feedback and use it to improv
The designer will need to work hours that aren’t typical, so a flexible approach and a word-class attitude is needed to get the best from the job.
